Who is responsible for your information
This website is operated by James Dowland, an independent collage illustrator based in Winchester, Hampshire, UK. For questions about this notice or your personal information, email jim@jamesdowland.co.uk.
Information collected
If you contact me by email, I receive the information you choose to provide, such as your name, email address, organisation and the contents of your enquiry.
The website host may also record limited technical information in server logs, including an IP address, browser type, requested pages, date and time, and referring page. This information is used to deliver and protect the website.
Anonymous website analytics include pages viewed, referring pages, approximate country or region, browser, operating system and device type. Umami uses an IP address to derive approximate location but does not store the IP address. It creates rotating, non-identifying session values to distinguish visits and does not track visitors across different websites.
How and why information is used
I use enquiry information to reply, discuss possible commissions, provide requested services and maintain appropriate business records. The lawful bases are taking steps at your request before entering into a contract, performing a contract, and legitimate interests in communicating with clients and running my work as an illustrator.
Technical log information is processed where necessary for the legitimate interests of operating, maintaining and securing the website.
Anonymous analytics are used only to produce aggregate statistics about how this website is used and to help improve its content, organisation and performance. Where this processing involves personal information, the lawful basis is the legitimate interest in understanding and improving the website. Analytics are not used for advertising, profiling or making decisions about individual visitors.
Service providers
The website and associated email services are provided through Krystal Hosting. The site’s font and stylesheet files are hosted locally with the rest of the website rather than loaded from third-party content delivery networks.
Anonymous website analytics are provided by Umami Software, Inc. through Umami Cloud. Umami acts as an analytics service provider and processes information only to provide these statistics. Umami Cloud operates servers in the European Union and the United States, so analytics information may be processed outside the UK. Where required, international transfers must be protected by safeguards recognised under UK data-protection law.
Personal information is not sold. It is shared only where necessary to operate the website and email, provide a requested service, comply with the law, or protect legal rights.
Analytics and browser storage
Umami analytics does not set cookies, create persistent device identifiers or track visitors across websites. This site relies on the statistical-purposes exception under UK electronic-communications rules for its limited, aggregate analytics.
You can object at any time using the control below. If you disable analytics, this browser stores a small preference named jamesdowland.analytics.disabled so the site can remember not to load Umami. This preference is used only to honour your choice.

How long information is kept
Enquiry information is retained only for as long as needed to respond, manage a working relationship and meet necessary legal, tax or business-record requirements. Technical logs are retained according to the hosting provider’s operational and security retention periods.
Analytics information is retained only while it remains useful for understanding and improving the website. It is reviewed periodically and deleted when it is no longer needed or when the analytics account is closed.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you may have rights to access, correct or erase your personal information; restrict or object to its use; and receive a portable copy. You may also withdraw consent where consent is the basis for processing.
To exercise a right, email jim@jamesdowland.co.uk. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK data-protection regulator.
Changes to this notice
This page will be updated if the website or the way personal information is handled changes. The latest revision date will appear above.
